Thrifty Foods Celebrates Grand Opening with $75,000 Donation to Peace Arch Hospital
SURREY, B.C., February 3, 2010 - To mark the Grand Opening of their newest store, located at Morgan Crossing in South Surrey, Vancouver Island-based grocery retailer Thrifty Foods today announced it is making a $75,000 donation to the Peace Arch Hospital and Community Health Foundation’s Partners in Caring Campaign to help fund a new maternity ward for the communities of South Surrey and White Rock.
The Peace Arch Hospital’s new maternity ward will have close to three times the birthing capacity of the current ward, and will feature family-centered care in a homelike atmosphere, complete with ocean views. The new Thrifty Foods Education Centre will allow medical professionals a space in which to confer quickly, share experience and knowledge, and provide space for in-service training. It will also be used for educational programs for new parents.
Thrifty Foods made the announcement at the February 3rd opening of its new 35,000 square-foot store – the 23rd store in its chain and the fourth to be opened on the B.C. Lower Mainland – by demonstrating that it is eager to serve an important role as a community support partner. Since its inception in Victoria in 1977, Thrifty Foods has become well-known for always giving back to the communities in which it does business.
“We are very pleased to be contributing to Peace Arch Hospital’s new maternity ward to help meet the needs of this fast-growing community," says Thrifty Foods CEO Milford Sorensen, “and we will continue to look for ways of becoming engaged and doing our part in contributing to the quality of life in the South Surrey and White Rock communities,” he added.
“I applaud and thank Thrifty Foods for demonstrating its commitment to health care and to families who live in the community,” says Jackie Smith the Foundation’s Executive Director. “Thrifty Foods donation is an important gift to the $5.3 million, OH-BABY appeal.”
The Thrifty Foods Morgan Crossing store joins three other Thrifty Foods stores in Tsawwassen, Coquitlam and Port Moody as part of the company’s profile for growth on the B.C. Lower Mainland. More information on the company can be found at www.thriftyfoods.com.
