Because People Matter Grants

WHITE ROCK, B.C. Sept. 8, 2011 – Peace Arch Hospital and Community Health Foundation is now accepting applications for its Because People Matter (BPM) Grants, with grants ranging in value from $1,000 to $125,000.

If your organization has an idea of how to increase or improve medical care for residents of South Surrey / White Rock, the Foundation wants to hear from you. The Foundation’s annual BPM Grants support innovative projects at Peace Arch Hospital and in the community that focus on health education, research and service delivery.

Grant applications will be accepted until September 28th, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. Information about funding criteria and applications are available on the Foundation’s website at www.peacearchhospital.com/ click on how we help and grants.  Over $1.35 million has been invested in more than 70 projects since the inception of the Because People Matter Grants program in 1999. Examples of projects that have received BPM grant funding include:

  • Health Information Centre. Believing that people make better choices when they are well informed, a Because People Matter Grant has helped establish the Health Information Centre at Peace Arch Hospital. The Centre is located between the MRI facility and the Acute-Care Tower elevator. It is complete with a computer with internet access, a printer and a wide variety of printed material about illness and injury, prevention, health promotion and community resources.
  • Respirology Research. A Because People Matter Grant has funded a study designed to establish state-of-the-art methods at Peace Arch Hospital to evaluate airways disease. The goals of the study, led by Dr. Mark Turner, include finding new methods to diagnose and guide treatment for asthma, COPD and pneumonia.
  • Peace Arch Free Dental Clinic. There are more smiles in the community thanks to a group of dentists who, under the leadership of Dr. Ken Stones, opened the Peace Arch Free Dental Clinic in 2009. Twelve dentists volunteer at the clinic, which serves patients referred through the food bank and the women’s shelter. The BPM Grants helped support the clinic with funding for supplies.
  • Whalers Baseball. The Whalers are members of the Whale House, a South Surrey / White Rock rehabilitation program for adults living with mental illness. The rehabilitation program involves physical activity, which for this group means playing on the Whalers baseball team. The team’s baseball bats, gloves and uniforms were purchased with a Because People Matter Grant from Peace Arch Hospital and Community Health Foundation.
