Construction begins on new maternity ward
February 16, 2010 marked the day the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation announced the start of construction for the hospital’s new maternity ward. It was a happy day indeed! Phase One of the project, which constitutes four new birthing rooms, is scheduled to be complete this summer, with the remaining four rooms and the rest of the unit slated for completion by the end of the calendar year. The OH BABY appeal for a new maternity ward was officially launched in April, 2009 at the foundation’s annual Partners in Caring Gala. To date, nearly $4 million has been secured for this $5.3-million project. With construction underway we are on the homestretch to realizing a ward with close to three times the current birthing capacity, including eight single-family birthing rooms with private bathrooms, a new nursery and a secure dedicated entry, all of which will greatly enhance the outstanding care that is the hallmark of the Peace Arch Hospital Maternity Program. The maternity ward will remain open throughout this construction period. Until the first four birthing rooms are available, babies will be delivered in the current ward. Once completed, services will be offered in the new birthing rooms while the old ward is sealed off and reconstructed.
